Methodology

How we test

The short answer

We buy the gear ourselves, set it up in a real Apple-first home running a mix of Matter, Thread and HomeKit devices, and use it for at least two weeks before writing. If we didn't test it, we don't rank it.

The test environment

A real, lived-in household with multiple Thread border routers (Apple TV 4K + HomePod), a HomePod/Apple TV home hub on the post-Feb-2026 architecture, and a rotating bench of locks, sensors, cameras, lights and plugs from across the ecosystem.

What every review covers

  • Pairing reality — how the QR/NFC commissioning actually went, and what broke.
  • Reliability over time — Thread routing, drop-outs, and recovery across firmware updates.
  • Apple Home fit — automations, HomeKit Secure Video, hub dependencies.
  • Real photos — firmware-version screenshots from our own devices, not press images.

Disclosure

We buy most gear ourselves; occasionally we accept manufacturer review units, which we always disclose. Affiliate links never change our verdict — the testing notes are the product.
