Matter 1.6 Joint Fabric: Nothing Confirmed Two Months After Launch

The Connectivity Standards Alliance published Matter 1.6, and its headline feature, Joint Fabric, on June 17, 2026. Two months later, no platform has a confirmed Joint Fabric implementation, not even in beta.

What shipped: Matter 1.6, June 17, 2026, and Joint Fabric as its headline feature

Three things came with the release: NFC tap-to-pair setup, thermostat and energy device types with richer reporting, and Joint Fabric (the feature that lets more than one ecosystem co-administer a single Matter network through a shared datastore, instead of each ecosystem holding its own separate pairing to the same device). Matter 1.6 did not add any new device categories to the spec.

The scoreboard: who has it live today

Home Assistant’s Matter Server: Matter 1.6, but not confirmed for Joint Fabric

Home Assistant’s Matter Server was rewritten on matter.js in June 2026, replacing the retired python-matter-server project. The new project’s own changelog lists general Matter 1.6 spec support landing in v1.3.0, dated July 22, 2026. That changelog entry does not name Joint Fabric specifically, and no Home Assistant blog post, release note, or forum thread confirms Joint Fabric is running anywhere in Home Assistant, in beta or otherwise. Home Assistant’s project structure (an open-source hub with its own Matter Server component, iterating independently of any single hardware vendor’s release cycle) puts it in a position to move on a new spec feature faster than a hub tied to a hardware certification and QA schedule.

SmartThings’ beta hub firmware

SmartThings is reported to be bringing Matter 1.6 into beta, folding it into hub firmware in the 62.x line, but this rests on a single secondary source, not Samsung’s own documentation. Samsung didn’t call it out: the beta firmware’s own release notes describe the update in terms of reliability and Thread network management improvements, not Joint Fabric or Matter 1.6 by name. Samsung’s developer-docs and community release-notes pages could not be reached directly to corroborate the claim. Homey: certified for Matter 1.5, not yet 1.6

Apple, Google, Amazon: no public timeline

Apple, Google, and Amazon have not shipped Joint Fabric and have not said when they will. All three, along with Samsung (SmartThings’ parent), sit at the Promoter tier of the CSA, the same membership tier that includes the company reported to be moving Matter 1.6 into beta firmware. Promoter-tier membership means the company helped write the spec. It doesn’t set a ship date; each member does that on its own. Apple in particular has a documented pattern of trailing the Matter spec by a year or more on past releases, covered in the companion piece linked above.

What the adoption gap means in a real multi-ecosystem house

This house runs 27 HomeKit accessories, 10 of them Matter, across three ecosystems on one LAN. A live scan of _matter._tcp on that network turns up 17 operational records spread across three distinct compressed fabric IDs: the same physical devices, paired separately into each ecosystem, none of them aware of the others’ pairing. That’s what the absence of Joint Fabric looks like from inside an actual home: the same devices paired three separate times, once per ecosystem.

Joint Fabric is supposed to replace that stack of parallel pairings with one relationship every ecosystem can read. It needs support on both ends: device firmware and the ecosystem app. A hub that ships Joint Fabric tomorrow still wouldn’t do anything for a device whose manufacturer hasn’t updated its firmware to match.

What to watch next

Home Assistant’s changelog and forum are the places to watch for an entry naming Joint Fabric. Samsung’s own release notes or developer documentation would be the first confirmation for SmartThings. Homey’s next certification cycle is the one to watch for a jump from Matter 1.5 to 1.6. For Apple Home specifically, the release notes to check are iOS and tvOS betas. Nothing in them mentions Joint Fabric as of August 2026, and this piece will be updated if that changes.
