Matter 1.6 Sharing: Not in Apple Home as of August 2026
No. Joint Fabric arrived with Matter 1.6 on June 17, 2026, and as of August 2026 the Home app gives you no way to use it. Apple is still catching up on earlier Matter features, so figure on months rather than weeks.
No Joint Fabric support in Apple Home yet
No. You cannot, today, use Matter 1.6 Joint Fabric to share an accessory between Apple Home and another ecosystem. The capability lives in the specification the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) released in June; Apple has not yet exposed it in the Home app.
What Matter 1.6 announced on June 17, 2026
Three things led the announcement:
- Setup over NFC, so you tap the device instead of scanning a QR code.
- Joint Fabric, so one device can be held by several ecosystems without a separate pairing for each.
- Smarter thermostats and energy device types, richer control and reporting.
What Joint Fabric is, and how it differs from today’s multi-admin sharing
Right now, “sharing” a Matter device across ecosystems means multi-admin. You add the device to each platform separately and each keeps its own control path.
It works, but it’s untidy, because every platform manages the device on its own terms and nothing coordinates between them.
Joint Fabric aims to replace that stack of parallel pairings with one relationship that every ecosystem understands. It needs support on both ends, in the device firmware and in every ecosystem app, so even after Apple ships it a device only benefits once its manufacturer updates too.
What multi-admin looks like from the outside
Scanning this house for Matter devices turns up 17 operational records across three distinct compressed fabric IDs. Three ecosystems, one LAN, the same accessories reachable by more than one of them, and none of it visible from inside the Home app.
Why Apple Home doesn’t have it today
Apple trails the Matter spec consistently, often by a year or more, and was still filling in earlier Matter functionality long after those specs shipped.
Nothing suggests Joint Fabric will arrive faster than that usual cadence. It isn’t present in current developer betas, and Apple has said nothing about it.
Apple isn’t the only one still waiting on a stable release: the Joint Fabric adoption tracker covers where every other major platform stands.
What you can and can’t share right now
You can add the same Matter device to Apple Home and to Google or Alexa today via multi-admin. Joint Fabric itself waits on Apple.
What to watch for
Watch the iOS and tvOS release notes. When Apple ships it, I’ll test it against the three Matter fabrics already running in this house and report what works.
Common questions
Does Apple Home support Matter 1.6 cross-ecosystem sharing?
Not yet. You can read about Joint Fabric in the Matter 1.6 spec published June 17, 2026, but nothing in the current Home app or the developer betas makes use of it.
What did Matter 1.6 add?
NFC tap-to-pair setup, Joint Fabric so a device can be held by more than one ecosystem without separate pairings, and richer thermostat and energy device types. It added no new device categories.
