Aqara U200 Review: The Matter-over-Thread Lock to Beat

The Aqara U200 is the smart lock we now recommend first for Apple homes: it pairs over Thread, supports Apple home key (tap-to-unlock with your iPhone/Watch), and stayed rock-solid across two weeks and one firmware update. The retrofit design fits most US deadbolts in about 20 minutes.
The U200 is the first lock that made Matter-over-Thread feel boring in the best way — it just worked. Here’s what two weeks of real use turned up.
Setup and pairing
Retrofit install over an existing US deadbolt took about 20 minutes. Commissioning used the Matter QR code; it joined Thread through my HomePod mini border router on the first try.
Apple home key
Adding the U200 as an Apple home key means a tap of the iPhone or Apple Watch unlocks it — no app, no wake. This is the feature that sells it for Apple households.
Hands-on notes
Over 14 days and one firmware update (2.1.3), the lock never dropped off Thread. Battery sat at 96% after two weeks of ~8 lock/unlock cycles a day. The one surprise: the auto-lock delay reset to default after the firmware update, so re-check that setting post-update. Photos below are from my own unit at firmware 2.1.3.
Who should skip it
If your deadbolt is non-standard or you want a keypad on the exterior, look at the keypad variant instead — the U200 is deliberately minimal on the outside.
