Home hub duty covers four jobs: storing automations so they still fire when nobody’s phone is home, keeping HomeKit Secure Video recording, relaying remote access to the Home app from outside the house, and handing Siri requests to accessories. A HomePod does all four exactly the way an Apple TV 4K does. Since the February 10, 2026 architecture change retired the iPad as a hub option, Apple Home only recognizes two device types for this role, an Apple TV 4K or a HomePod / HomePod mini, and it doesn’t treat one type as more capable than the other.
Setup is one sign-in and one room assignment. Sign the HomePod into the same iCloud account the Home app uses, then give it a room during its own setup flow, the same two steps an Apple TV goes through.
Which HomePod models route Thread
HomePod mini and the current HomePod (2nd generation) both carry a Thread radio, and once either one is a home hub it starts routing Thread with no separate switch to flip, matching how an Apple TV 4K with a Thread radio behaves.

Wired networking, the remote, and on-screen status
Power and Wi-Fi are the HomePod’s only two connections, mini or full-size. The Apple TV 4K has a Gigabit Ethernet jack on the 2021 model and on the 2022 model’s 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet version. Checking status differs too: an Apple TV’s screen and remote show its model number under Settings > General > About; a HomePod has no screen or remote, so that check happens from the Home app on an iPhone instead.
How Apple Home picks the active hub
With two HomePods and an Apple TV all connected in this house, only one of them is doing hub work at a given moment, and nothing in Home Settings lets you choose which. Apple Home selects automatically among whatever Apple TVs and HomePods are connected, and Home Settings > Home Hubs & Bridges lists every eligible hub in the home and marks each Connected or not.
With three eligible hubs running here, checking status means confirming at least one shows Connected.
Temperature and humidity sensor
Both HomePod models have a temperature and humidity sensor built into the hardware. It sat unused until HomePod 16.3, which shipped January 24, 2023, and turned the reading on in software.
Once it’s enabled, the temperature and humidity show up on the HomePod’s own tile in the Home app, alongside every other accessory reporting conditions in that room.
A scan of the local HomeKit database in this home turns up a separate “HomePodSensor” accessory tied to the bedroom HomePod mini, on firmware 1.0.4. The kitchen HomePod mini doesn’t show that same separate entry in the same scan. That’s not proof the kitchen unit lacks the sensor or has it switched off. The scan may simply not have captured it. The two units haven’t been checked side by side in the Home app, so whether the kitchen HomePod mini also has the sensor is unresolved.

iOS 26 hub reports and the rumored October 2026 Apple hub
An active thread on Apple’s own community forums has HomePod owners reporting hubs going to “No Response” after the iOS 26 rollout. Apple hasn’t acknowledged this as a bug, and nothing published ties a hub-connectivity issue to iOS 26 as of August 2026. If a HomePod here started throwing that error, rebooting the border router first is already the documented fix for a Thread mesh that’s split, and it’s the same first move for a hub that’s stopped responding.
Separately, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported on July 28, 2026 that Apple is developing a HomePod-like home hub with a 7-inch display, a tvOS-based operating system, and Siri as the core interface, possibly alongside a security camera accessory, targeting an October 2026 to early-2027 window. Apple hasn’t confirmed any of it, and it doesn’t change what a current HomePod or Apple TV does as a hub today.
Which to add first if you’re starting from zero
The practical order is an Apple TV 4K with a Thread radio, wired to Ethernet, as the anchor, then a HomePod mini for whichever room needs coverage or a speaker, the same order laid out in the border-router buying guide. A HomePod mini is a complete home hub by itself, with no Apple TV required, if a streaming box isn’t something you want anyway.
